In just 3.7 seconds, it goes from 0 to 100. In 48 months, it went from 0 to 1! To put it simply: The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling car globally in 2023! This was announced by market observer Jato Dynamics. According to current data, approximately 1.23 million units of the electric car have been sold in key markets worldwide. Jato analyst Felipe Muñoz remarked, “What Tesla was able to achieve with the Model Y in such a short time is simply remarkable.”.
The global Jato evaluation is incomplete without December. However, Tesla’s electric SUV crossover has already secured a substantial sales advantage in the first eleven months of the year, making it unassailable. This is evident from the sales figures of the following top-selling cars so far: The compact SUV Toyota RAV4 holds second place with approximately 1.07 million units, and the compact Toyota Corolla ranks third with 1.01 million units (across all body styles).
What Factors Contribute to the Global Success of the Model Y?
As per Jato’s analysis, the Tesla Model Y holds the top position in both Europe and China markets. The British consulting firm examined data from 30 European countries, revealing approximately 255,000 new registrations. This places the electric car ahead of other popular models like the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208, and Volkswagen T-Roc.
It’s also interesting how Jato derives the success: “The average sales price of the Model Y in Europe in November 2023 was 18 percent below the absolute average price for a new electric car, and in the USA it was 23 percent.” This heightened the existing strong demand, bolstered by Tesla’s positive reputation as a dependable and competitive manufacturer. Consequently, Tesla holds a prominent position in the minds of consumers considering electric car purchases.
What Caused Toyota to Lose Its Lead for the First Time?
Despite securing second place, Toyota, the global market leader, relinquishes its top spot in the global sales rankings for the first time. Nonetheless, the year 2023 marked success for the Japanese multinational corporation. Sales of the RAV4 increased by approximately 50,000 units since 2022. The Corolla also experienced robust sales. “But neither car is available as a fully electric version and therefore cannot enter the electric car market, which is now very important in Europe and China.”
Toyota has initiated steps to introduce six new electric car models by 2026. Jato has not disclosed the ranking position of the leading German car (or which model it was) in global rankings. The count was based on data and forecasts from 41 markets worldwide.
